PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, 9 January 2024
In response to the alarming rise of tribal hate speech by politicians in Sierra Leone, the Network Movement for Democracy and Human Rights (NMDHR) is calling on citizens to stand united in condemning such divisive language that threatens the fabric of our society.
We have recorded recent incidents of inflammatory rhetoric targeting specific tribal groups that have raised concerns about the growing polarization within Sierra Leone. We believe in the strength of diversity and the importance of fostering understanding among all members of our society.
NMDHR firmly denounces any form of hate speech that perpetuates stereotypes, fosters discrimination, and divides our country. We advocate for open dialogue, empathy, and education as essential tools to combat prejudice and build bridges between different tribal groups across Sierra Leone.
As an organization committed to inclusivity and respect, we call upon all members, leaders, and influencers to join us in promoting a culture of unity. We must work together to dismantle the barriers created by hate speech and foster an environment where every individual is valued and respected.
NMDHR is calling on all tribal heads, and the leadership of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC), National Commission for Democracy (NCD), and the National Council for Civic Education and Democracy (NaCCED) to amplify awareness raising initiative about the consequences of tribal hate speech and to promote mutual understanding among Sierra Leoneans. We encourage individuals, businesses, and institutions to actively engage in these efforts to create a more harmonious and inclusive society.
Together, let us reject divisive language and embrace the richness of our diverse backgrounds. By standing united against tribal hate speech, we can build a stronger, more resilient country for everyone.
